Many moving parts in paper business

By
Megan Barton, Publisher — Cody Enterprise, Feb. 4

Producing a local newspaper is not a one-button operation. At the Cody Enterprise, there are many moving parts that have to work together, every single week, twice a week, to ensure the paper lands in the hands of our community.

The majority of our readers understandably never see this process in person. They don’t witness the planning meetings, the reporting, the editing, the layout, the proofing, the advertising coordination, the press deadlines, or the physical work that comes after the pages are finalized. And that’s okay; that’s our job. But it’s worth noting that what shows up in your mailbox represents the effort of a small team of people, all working against the clock.

We operate under strict, non-negotiable deadlines. These deadlines are followed not only in our office, but also in coordination with the post office. They are met week after week, and when something falls outside of our control, we are up-front about it. If someone calls or walks in asking about a late paper, we don’t hide it. We explain exactly what’s going on. It’s never been a secret, and it never will be.

It’s also important to understand that the Cody Enterprise is not always the cause of a delayed paper. Just like any operation, other institutions involved in the delivery process can have their own hiccups. When that happens, we do our best to communicate clearly and keep readers informed.

One thing that is certain is this: the paper itself is done on time. Our E-edition is live online by at least 4 p.m. the evening prior to delivery. That means the newspaper has already been fully produced and is in the hands of our staff, being stuffed, labeled, and prepared for transport to the post office.

Local journalism takes coordination, accountability, and consistency. Behind every issue of the Cody Enterprise is a team working hard to meet deadlines and serve this community, often in ways that go unseen, but never taken lightly.
