DEVILS TOWER, Wyo. - On Saturday, August 1, at 10:40 a.m., the Left Creek Fire was reported by Crook County Dispatch, approximately one mile from Devils Tower National Monument.
Given the proximity of the fire and its path toward the monument, the park ordered an immediate evacuation for visitors and employees’ safety at approximately 11:30 a.m.
At 6:20 p.m. the fire had grown to 225 acres, and by 7:49 p.m. the fire was actively being fought by more than 150 firefighters, along with four large airtankers, four helicopters, and two single engine air tankers.
As of today, August 2, at 10:00 a.m., hot and dry conditions are influencing fire growth — now at 282 acres. The fire is at zero percent containment. Due to the aggressive nature of the fire and the close proximity to the park, Devils Tower National Monument remains closed.
Further details will be available after 3:00 p.m. today.
