SHERIDAN (WNE) — A wildfire near Clearmont called the SR Buffalo Fire burned more than 1,000 acres Sunday, according to officials.

Sheridan County Fire Warden Chris Thomas said there were no injuries reported, no structures lost and the fire is near full containment as of Monday morning. The total burned area is estimated to be near 1,300 acres.

The fire started shortly after midnight Sunday after wind gusts of up to 50 mph brought down several power lines, igniting the blaze, Thomas said.

The fire burned through rugged terrain across private, public and Bureau of Land Management land, making access difficult for firefighters. Six aircraft were also deployed to help battle the fire, Thomas said.

According to the Clearmont Fire District Facebook page, the fire started on the north side of Passaic Road and jumped the road spreading south. The fire was knocked down and crews cleared around 6:30 p.m. Sunday with mop up operations continuing Monday.

Despite the hot and dry weather, fire conditions have not worsened significantly because no major wind events are currently in the forecast.

"Hot and dry conditions continue, but right now it doesn't look like there's any particularly strong wind events in the forecast," said Billings National Weather Service Meteorologist Emily Archer. "That will help limit fire activity, but it's still something worth keeping an eye on."
