Newcastle’s homecoming crowd got everything it could have hoped for Friday night as the Dogies hammered the Glenrock Herders 54–14 behind a punishing ground game and a swarming defense. The win lifted Newcastle to 3–1 in the 3A East and underscored the Dogies’ status as one of the league’s most physical teams.

“Keep them Dogies rollin’!” Coach Matt Conzelman said after the victory. “Everything worked out like we wanted.”

The Dogies’ defense set the tone immediately. After winning the toss and deferring, Newcastle forced a quick three-and-out and a punt. Unfortunately, the Dogies’ opening drive ended with a fumble, and Glenrock capitalized on a long run to take an early 7–0 lead, but that was the last time the Herders found the end zone.

From there, the Dogies unleashed an offense that simply could not be stopped. Collin McConkey answered with a 65-yard touchdown run, and Newcastle erupted for 27 second-quarter points to seize control with a 34–7 halftime lead.

By the time all was said and done, Newcastle ran 56 plays and rolled up 521 yards, including 463 rushing yards on 47 carries, averaging nearly 10 yards a rush. The Dogies never punted and converted multiple long third downs, breaking off big plays and controlling the clock.

Newcastle held Glenrock to just 120 total yards and three first downs on 24 plays, including only 70 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

“It was a good team effort. It is amazing what can get accomplished when you don’t care who gets the credit,” Conzelman said.

The Dogies’ dominance on the ground wasn’t just about gaudy yardage totals; it was the way they imposed their will on both sides of the ball. Newcastle’s ability to churn out first downs, stay ahead of the chains and finish drives reflected the balanced, unselfish approach Conzelman praised all week in practice.

“It was a good night to be a Dogie,” Conzelman said.

The Dogies will hope to keep the roll going when they travel to Moorcroft on Friday, Oct. 10, for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Wolves.

“We just got to play one game at a time. They’re a scrappy squad, and they have a running back that runs hard,” Conzelman said, indicating that the key for his players is to respect every opponent and maintain their edge regardless of the scoreboard or the standings, because the conference race can swing quickly this time of year.

“Our goal is to get at least one home playoff game, so you just have to keep scrapping every week because one of these games will have those types of playoff implications,” he said.
