Campbell County firefighters tackling 2,000-acre fire started by lightning Sunday night
GILLETTE (WNE) — The Campbell County Fire Department was busy Sunday night after a passing storm caused a few fires, including one that has burned a few thousand acres already.
Monday morning, firefighters were working on two fires north of Rozet. The Kohn’s Fire has burned more than 2,000 acres, and the Little Mitchell Creek Fire has burned between 40 and 60 acres.
The fire department is expecting to get more accurate mapping on these fires Monday using aircraft.
Firefighters responded to several calls within an hour and a half Sunday night.
Heavy equipment operated throughout the evening and overnight, and aircraft and other resources are coming to Campbell County to help with firefighting efforts.
Because the county received significant lightning Sunday evening and overnight, there still may be more fires that have gone undetected.
Several additional fires were contained at smaller acreages. Some other reported fires were extinguished by rainfall associated with the thunderstorms.
Hot temperatures are expected throughout the week, along with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, which could lead to more fires.
