Why Suffering? Discovering God’s Presence in Our Pain

Why does God allow suffering? In times of pain and loss, we may struggle to understand, but God's Word assures us that He is our refuge, near to the brokenhearted, and working all things for good. Discover His presence, peace, and eternal hope in the midst of trials.
When tragedy strikes, such as the devastation we have seen in this country recently, it’s natural to ask, "Why does God let bad things happen?" The pain and loss felt by those who have lost everything can bring many to this difficult question. It’s important to approach this with compassion and understanding, acknowledging the real grief and hurt that people are experiencing.
One of the key truths that we can hold onto is that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble." Even in the darkest moments, God is there, offering His presence and strength to those who turn to Him. He is not distant or unconcerned with our suffering; He is with us in the midst of it.
It’s also helpful to remember that we live in a fallen world, where suffering is part of the human experience. Natural disasters, sickness, and loss are consequences of the brokenness that came into the world through sin. While God did not intend for pain and suffering to be part of His creation, He has not left us without hope. He is still sovereign, still in control, and still working in and through the world’s pain to bring about His good purposes. Romans 8:28 tells us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Even in tragedy, God is working for good, though it may be difficult to see in the moment.
For those who are suffering, it’s important to know that God is near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit." He doesn’t turn away from those who grieve or feel lost; instead, He draws near to offer comfort and healing. His heart is tender toward those who are in pain, and He promises to provide strength and support during these times.
In the midst of suffering, it can also be comforting to know that Jesus offers a peace that the world cannot provide. John 14:27 assures us, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." While the world may offer temporary solutions or distractions, the peace that Jesus offers transcends our circumstances and brings lasting comfort in the midst of storms.
Finally, as we reflect on the pain and loss caused by disasters like these fires, we can find hope in the eternal perspective. The Bible assures us that, one day, God will make all things new. There will be no more pain, suffering, or death. Revelation 21:4 says, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." This hope in eternity can provide strength to endure the hardships of today, knowing that the pain we experience now is temporary in light of the eternal glory that awaits us in Christ.
While we may not have all the answers to why suffering happens, we can trust in God’s goodness and His sovereignty, even when we don’t understand. In times like these, it is a reminder of how much we need God’s presence, peace, and comfort, and how we can turn to Him for hope and strength, no matter the circumstances.
During suffering and loss, it’s crucial to turn to God, for He is our refuge and strength. He is near to the brokenhearted, and His peace transcends understanding. While we may not fully understand why suffering happens, we can trust in His goodness and His eternal promises. So, let us heed the call of Scripture: "Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near" (Isaiah 55:6). Now is the time to turn to God and find comfort, hope, and peace in Him.
