The saying "ignorance is bliss" may hold true in some aspects of life, but when it comes to matters of faith and spiritual truth, ignorance can be perilous. Knowing and understanding the Word of God is crucial for believers because spiritual ignorance can lead to vulnerability and stagnation in our faith.

The Word of God serves as the foundation of our faith. As Romans 10:17 states, "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." Without a solid understanding of God's Word, our faith may falter, leaving us susceptible to doubts and uncertainties.

Furthermore, knowledge of Scripture provides discernment and protection. Ephesians 6:17 describes the Word of God as the "sword of the Spirit", an essential piece of armor for spiritual warfare. When we are rooted in Scripture, we gain the ability to recognize falsehoods and deception, shielding us from the traps of the enemy.

Spiritual growth and transformation also depend on our engagement with God’s Word. Psalm 119:105 declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Through studying and meditating on Scripture, we gain wisdom, insight, and guidance. It is through the Word that we mature spiritually, becoming more like Christ in character and conduct.

In addition to strengthening our own faith, knowing God’s Word enables us to be effective witnesses for Christ. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 emphasizes the usefulness of Scripture for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. As 1 Peter 3:15 urges, "but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect." A thorough knowledge of God's Word equips us to share the gospel with confidence, disciple others effectively, and engage in meaningful ministry that honors God and impacts lives. Colossians 3:16 encourages us, "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God." When we allow God's Word to fill our hearts and minds, we not only strengthen our own faith but also help others grow in their walk with Christ.

The idea that "ignorance is bliss" does not apply to the Word of God. Spiritual ignorance can hinder our faith, leave us vulnerable to deception, stunt our spiritual growth, and limit our effectiveness in serving God. Proverbs 19:2 warns, "Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, and he who hurries his footsteps errs." Therefore, we must prioritize studying, understanding, and applying God’s Word in our daily lives, knowing that true joy and fulfillment come from walking in His truth.

Lastly, ignorance will not serve as an excuse before God. It will not be acceptable to say, "But the preacher told me," when it comes to our knowledge of the Word. Each individual is accountable for their own understanding and application of God’s truth. Relying solely on the words of others without personal examination and discernment is not acceptable in God’s eyes. As 2 Timothy 2:15 instructs, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth." We must take responsibility for our spiritual growth, striving to know God’s Word deeply and accurately so that we may walk confidently in His truth.
