The question of responsibility when someone is led astray by a false prophet is a serious one. The Bible provides clear answers by addressing both the false prophet and the deceived individual. God’s Word is unchanging and provides warnings and guidance on this issue.

The Responsibility of the False Prophet
Scripture repeatedly warns about the dangers of false prophets and the consequences they face. Jesus said, “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15-16a). False prophets deliberately distort the truth to deceive others, often for personal gain or power.

Their actions are not without consequences. In Matthew 18:6, Jesus warns of the severe judgment awaiting those who lead others astray:
“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea.”

God holds false prophets accountable for their deception. In the Old Testament, the seriousness of their offense is emphasized:
“But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name, a word which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die” (Deuteronomy 18:20).

False prophets knowingly distort God’s Word, and their punishment will be severe because they harm others spiritually.

The Responsibility of the Deceived
While false prophets are clearly accountable, those who are led astray also bear responsibility for discerning truth. God has given His Word to guide us, and we are commanded to test what we hear. Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans for their diligence in doing just that: “Now these people were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.”

The Bible also warns of the consequences of neglecting truth. Hosea 4:6 declares: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Since you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest; since you have forgotten the Law of your God, I also will forget your children.”

This passage highlights the responsibility of each person to seek God’s truth. Those who refuse to seek or accept it are held accountable for their choices.

God’s Grace and Justice
God’s justice is always balanced by His grace. For those who are genuinely misled but sincerely seek to follow Him, God is merciful. He knows the hearts of all people. However, for those who willingly reject the truth or follow false prophets out of convenience, the blame cannot be shifted. Ezekiel 18:30 reminds us of personal accountability: “Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God. “Repent and turn away from all your offenses, so that wrongdoing does not become a stumbling block to you.”

Conclusion
Ultimately, God holds both the false prophet and the deceived individual responsible in different ways. False prophets will face severe judgment for leading others astray, as seen in Matthew 18:6. However, individuals are also accountable for seeking God’s truth and testing what they hear, as Acts 17:11 teaches.

This reality calls for vigilance and devotion to God’s Word. Jesus Himself warns in Matthew 24:24, “For false christs and false prophets will arise and will provide great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.”

And you know, it’s not enough to simply rely on what others say. Open your Bibles and read for yourself what God has to say! The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth, just as Jesus promised: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come” (John 16:13).

Let us not be among those who are misled. Instead, let us rely on the Holy Spirit and the unchanging Word of God as our guide, ensuring that we walk in truth and are not deceived.
