Where history still lives

As you read our front page story on the efforts of local historians to find a way to display some of the history salvaged from the Old Mill, we hope it encourages you to embrace the historic buildings that still exist in Newcastle and Weston County. One of those buildings is the local library, which we continue to celebrate in our History on Main series on page six this week. Like the Old Mill and some of our other lost treasures, the greatest danger our library faces is that we will eventually stop using it, and our best chance to preserve that building lies in a commitment to ensure it is always useful and appreciated by the community.
We commend Brenda Mahoney-Ayres and the current library staff for working so hard to remind us how important the library is to our heritage and to make sure it continues to serve a vital purpose here. We urge those who have not visited the building lately to stop by and see what they have going on.
In a day and age when it seems like everything we need can be found at the touch of a finger, a trip to the library may seem like an inconvenience, but the Old Mill should remind us of the cost convenience sometimes makes us pay.
