Primaries don’t always grab attention like a general election does, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t as important for the valley’s voters.

The relatively short primary ballot holds important implications, especially for registered Democrats who are narrowing the field of Democrats for the Teton County Board of County Commissioners from three to two before the general election, where they’ll face at least one Republican and likely an Independent.

The major party voters elect their precinct committee people in the primary, so it does matter. Precinct committee men and women are elected in the Democratic and Republican primaries. This is an important elected party leadership post; they’re in charge of nominating a replacement should an elected official from their party fail to complete his or her term in office.

The nonpartisan Jackson Town Council race is packed with six candidates, and only four will move on to the general election. Two mayoral candidates will both move on to the general election, but the primary results will heavily foreshadow what happens in November.

Registered voters can cast ballots early at the County Clerk’s office, 200 S. Willow St., during business hours. Or on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Election Day, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at one of five locations in Jackson, Wilson or Alta.
