Trade schools offer good option

As another school year at Cody High School draws to a close, our soon-to-be graduates stand at the cusp of adulthood. While we dedicate ourselves to shaping these young minds and setting them on a path to success, it’s crucial to acknowledge that a four-year college is not the only route to a fulfilling and prosperous future.

We must recognize the immense value and necessity of trade schools. While all forms of education are commendable, our communities consistently require skilled professionals such as plumbers, electricians, mechanics and cosmetologists. Often, we see students embark on college careers without a clear understanding of their chosen major, leading to changes in direction, academic struggles, time off, or even dropping out entirely – all of which can result in increased financial burdens.

The reality is that the majority of college graduates faces the daunting task of repaying student loans, and entry-level salaries don’t always align with these financial obligations. Trade schools, conversely, offer a direct path to careers with consistent demand. Furthermore, their typically lower tuition costs and shorter program durations mean less debt and the opportunity to enter the workforce and start earning sooner.

Ultimately, we believe every graduating student should have a well-defined plan, whether it involves college, a gap year or a trade school. It is essential that all options are thoroughly explored before graduation, ensuring that each student is well-informed and empowered to make the best choice for their individual aspirations and circumstances.
