SHERIDAN — Sheridan County School District 1 will have an in-house school psychologist starting the 2025-2026 school year.

The school district 1 board approved Kathryn Gaddy’s hire during its March 11 meeting.

A school psychologist within a school setting serves as part of the special education team and is a required part of the team when evaluating and reevaluating students. One of the roles of a school psychologist is to conduct mandatory evaluations of students with disabilities, including required three-year reevaluations.

The school district is required to use the services of a school psychologist and is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act — a law making an appropriate public education and sufficient special education services available to eligible children with disabilities in the U.S. The act also supports early intervention services for infants, toddlers and their families and awards competitive discretionary grants, according to a U.S. Department of Education webpage.

The role is currently filled by contract providers. The district currently spends about $90,000 a year outsourcing the service.
