"Freedom to Work and Build Business" Bill Ends Non-Compete Agreements in Wyoming

CHEYENNE, WY – Wyoming workers and entrepreneurs scored a major victory today as Senator Tara Nethercott successfully led the passage of SF 107, the Freedom to Work and Build Business Act, a landmark bill banning non-compete agreements across the state.

With the passage of SF 107, Wyoming has taken a bold step to empower workers, foster innovation, and support economic growth by eliminating restrictive contracts that have historically hindered career mobility and business expansion. The bill ensures that employees can freely pursue job opportunities and that entrepreneurs can start new ventures without legal barriers.

"This is a win for hardworking Wyomingites and the future of our state’s economy," said Senator Nethercott. "By eliminating non-compete agreements, we are reinforcing the principles of free enterprise, encouraging competition, and giving employees the freedom to use their skills and expertise where they are most valued."

Non-compete agreements have long been criticized for stifling competition and limiting wage growth. By prohibiting these contracts, SF 107 positions Wyoming as a leader in worker freedom and business innovation. The bill has received strong support from small business owners, workforce advocates, and economic development leaders, all of whom recognize the benefits of a more dynamic and competitive job market.

A Stronger Future for Wyoming’s Workforce

SF 107 is expected to boost job creation, attract top talent, and encourage entrepreneurship by allowing professionals to transition between jobs and industries without unnecessary restrictions.

"With this legislation, we are not just protecting workers—we are also strengthening our economy by ensuring businesses can attract and retain top talent without artificial barriers," Senator Nethercott added. "Wyoming is open for business, and this bill sends a clear message that we support innovation and economic freedom."

The passage of SF 107 is a significant step toward modernizing Wyoming’s labor laws and ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to thrive in an open and competitive marketplace.

Governor Gordon signed the bill last week and the law goes into effect July 1, 2025.
