The 'Rona 15

I
don’t know about you, but the Coronavirus Quarantine has not been kind to me when it comes to fitness. As the weeks of staying at home morphed into months, the lazier and more connected to my couch I became.
Not only did I become lazy about getting any form of exercise, but I also got lazy with my eating habits. It’s much easier to eat a quick, calorie-laden meal than think about cooking a healthy one.
I bought a rowing machine, hoping that having it sit on my living room floor would encourage me to do at least a little bit of something while I was binge watching my favorite shows on Netflix and Hulu.
Turns out, my cat Bridgette got on it more than I did.
So, with that in mind, last weekend my family went to Rapid City to celebrate my son’s birthday, and on the itinerary was bowling and axe throwing.
Now, neither of these activities is very taxing physically, so I felt no qualms about joining in the fun despite the fact that the most exercise I’ve had in a very long time is walking from the couch to the kitchen and back again.
Our first stop was Meadowood Bowling Lanes. We all had masks at the ready in case we ran into a crowd, however, there was only one other patron using the lanes so we were able to enjoy two games without the worry of being in close proximity with others.
I can’t even remember the last time I bowled, and it was pretty easy for anyone to see I was rusty, but I ended up finishing second in both games (though I will keep my score to myself)!
Then it was off to axe throwing.
If you’ve never experienced this new craze, I highly recommend it. Granted, it can be a little scary when you first try it out, but it quickly becomes a highly entertaining activity.
Anyway, we enjoyed an hour of hurling axes at the targets, and I finished the day hitting the bullseye five times and came away with the highest score of the day!
Again, the axe throwing place was not busy, so once again we had no worries about social distancing while we had our fun.
All told, we probably spent about three and a half hours bowling and axe throwing and, like I said, neither activity is very taxing.
Because this is the case, I hate to admit how tired I was on the drive back to Newcastle! We arrived home at around 8 and I had to fight to stay awake until 10 p.m.
What was worse was that on Sunday morning as I stepped out of bed, I was stunned to discover how sore I was. Seriously — I was sore!
It was then that it really hit me that my lethargy had reached the absurd. Not only have I gained far too much weight during quarantine, but my physical well-being is non-existent.
I decided right then and there, that it is time to make a change. There is no longer an excuse to lead a sedentary lifestyle while eating Bon Bons and binging Netflix and Hulu, because that will probably kill me long before COVID will.
