Reverend
A simple look at the title “Reverend,” Psalm 111:9, and why reverence belongs to God alone.
The title “Reverend” is used often, but it is worth asking a simple question. Where does it come from?
In Scripture, the word appears in reference to God, not man. “Holy and awesome is His name.” (Psalm 111:9) In the King James Version, that same line reads, “reverend is His name.”
That matters.
The word is describing God’s name, not giving a title to a preacher. It speaks of His holiness, His authority, and the reverence due to Him alone.
Yet over time, the word has been taken and placed in front of men.
This is not about attacking people or titles. It is about understanding what belongs to God. Scripture never instructs believers to call a man “Reverend.” It consistently points attention upward, not toward human titles.
Jesus said, “Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.” (Matthew 23:10) The issue is not respect. The issue is where honor is directed.
God’s name is holy. It is to be revered.
And that is something no man should take to himself.
