Resolve to make resolutions stick
‘Tis the season for New Year resolutions. We’ve been flooded with advertisements and postings about gym membership deals, miracle pills and meal plans. But, none of the advertised products actually work, it’s the individual that has to put it to good use.
It’s believed that ancient Babylon is responsible for the creation of the New Year resolution. Starting some 4,000 years ago with the Akitu festival, Babylonians would make promises to the gods which would include repayment of debt, returning borrowed goods, pledging their loyalty to the king, etc. A far cry from the self-care resolutions we tend to focus on now.
It wasn’t until the early 1800’s that we coined the phrase “New Year Resolution” thanks to the Boston Times. Since then we’ve focused on goals that most of us don’t intend to actually meet.
As of now, these industries seem to be preying on those who are seeking to do better, but will ultimately succumb to the monthly auto fee as laziness seems to go the extra mile
So, why don’t we look to set new New Year Resolutions? Self care doesn’t just mean getting to the gym everyday and eating your vegetables (I am, however, in full support of these habits).
Start small. Don’t think too far out of the box. Keep it simple with something like reading a chapter in a new book each night before bed instead of doom scrolling on social media. Make a daily task list for yourself that includes a morning, mid day and nightly routine and quite literally check off each task as you finish it.
It’s said that the average person forms a habit in about 66 days, that’s only about 2 months and those 2 months are going to pass whether you’re putting in the work or not, so you might as well give yourself a reason to be proud. Even if it’s small. Holding yourself accountable in small ways on a daily basis will allow you to reach big goals in the end.
So, with the New Year upon us next week, put a plan together now. Remember, keep it simple and make it attainable. Keep up with it throughout the entire year and come December 31, 2025 you’ll have achieved your goals and have all the more reason to celebrate..
