How Can I Get Closer to God in My Daily Life?
Many Christians find comfort in the shallow waters of faith, but Christ calls us to cast our nets into the deep. When He told the fishermen to launch their boats into deeper waters, He wasn’t just guiding them to catch more fish. He was teaching them to trust Him beyond what they could see, to step into a space where faith and obedience are tested, and where God's provision exceeds expectations.
In our own walk with God, the shallow waters represent a surface-level relationship with Him. We may know the basic truths about who He is but avoid a deeper understanding or commitment. Yet, God calls us into a deeper relationship, one that challenges us to grow and stretch our faith.
Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10) This abundant life is found in the deep waters, where we rely fully on His guidance and trust in His promises.
In Psalm 42:7, we read, "Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me." The deeper we go with God, the more we experience the overwhelming depth of His love, mercy, and truth.
But it takes courage to go deeper. In Matthew 14:29, Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water toward Jesus. When he focused on the Lord, he walked in faith, but when his focus shifted to the storm, he began to sink. This is a reminder that stepping into the deep requires unwavering trust in God. “And he said, ‘Come!’ And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:29)
As we move deeper into God’s Word, we begin to see that “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) It transforms our hearts and minds, reshaping our desires and purpose.
The challenge lies in the fact that many don’t know what they don’t know concerning the Word of God. Just like the fishermen who didn’t fully grasp what would happen when they cast their nets into deeper waters, many believers are unaware of the depth of God's Word and how it can change their lives. “But the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)
Ultimately, the call to cast our nets into the deep waters is an invitation to experience the fullness of God’s presence. As He promises in James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” The deeper we go with Him, the more we discover about His character, His love, and His plans for our lives.
