CHEYENNE (WNE) – East High School entered lockdown Wednesday around 11:55 a.m. after police received reports of a student with a gun in the bathroom.

Ultimately, the school was cleared, and officers determined there was no threat to the public, though calls like this are reportedly part of a statewide trend.

The school was on lockdown for roughly half an hour before it was changed to a hold status. Students were held in their classrooms, and residents were asked to keep clear of the area as officers checked out the validity of the threat.

According to the Cheyenne Police Department, additional officers were dispatched to assist and entered the school “without hesitation.” Officers then began simultaneously securing and searching the interior. They ultimately determined that there was no threat to public safety, and no injuries were reported.

This is the second lockdown that East High has had in the last month. The first was on Sept. 26 when a student reported that another student intended to shoot up the school. Tyler Bathke, 18, was not found to be in possession of a weapon, and was arrested for making terroristic threats.

“It appears that this particular threat has become a statewide trend,” a CPD Facebook post informed the public. “Similar unsubstantiated calls are being made to schools across the region.”
