Understanding Romans 10:4

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Romans 10:4

Paul wrote that, and there’s a lot packed into one line. People have always asked the same question—does this mean the Law no longer matters? The answer is no. The Law isn’t cancelled. Paul’s word for “end” is telos, which can mean “the finish line” or “the goal.” In other words, Christ is the goal the Law was always pointing toward. He didn’t come to tear it down but to fulfill it.

The Law had a purpose. It showed what holiness looks like and made clear how short we fall. It taught Israel how to live as God’s people, but it could never make anyone righteous. The Law revealed the standard but couldn’t produce the heart to meet it. It was like handing someone a ruler and expecting them to become taller. As Paul wrote, “Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, ‘The righteous one will live by faith.’” (Galatians 3:11)

Faith has always been the key. Abraham believed God, and that faith was counted as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). The Law came later to guide and teach, but righteousness never came through it. The Law gives commands, but Christ gives power. The Law exposes sin, but Christ removes it. The Law builds fences, but Christ opens the gate.

Jesus said, “Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17) He fulfilled it not just by obeying it perfectly, but by living out everything it represented—love, holiness, mercy, justice, and grace. What the Law hinted at, Jesus made complete.

Paul said, “For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness.” That means the Law no longer serves as the pathway to being right with God. Jesus is that pathway now. “But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been revealed
through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe.” (Romans 3:21–22) The Law says, “Do and live.” Jesus says, “Believe and live.” The Law demands perfection, but Jesus offers His own.

Grace doesn’t give us permission to live any way we please. It gives us power to live differently. “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under Law but under grace.” (Romans 6:14) Jesus didn’t end the Law so we could sin freely. He fulfilled it so we could walk in freedom and actually desire to obey God—not because we’re afraid, but because His Spirit lives in us.

So what do we do with all this? We stop trying to earn what God already gave through His Son. We stop measuring holiness by performance. We believe, and because we believe, we live differently. Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness—the destination the Law always pointed toward.

In plain terms: The Law was the road sign. Jesus is the destination. Once you’ve arrived, you don’t keep staring at the sign.
