The Newcastle Dogies saw their season come to an end Friday as they fell to the host Glenrock Herders, 59-44, in the second round of the 3A East Regional Tournament.
Despite a determined second-half effort from Teddy Troftgruben, who overcame early foul trouble to score 18 of his 20 points after halftime, the Dogies were unable to rally past the Herders on their home court. Newcastle trailed from the outset and struggled to find consistent scoring as Glenrock methodically built their lead.
The Dogies started strong with six early points from Kyan Allen and five from Thatcher Troftgruben in the first quarter, but they found themselves down 16-12 after the opening eight minutes. Glenrock’s Casey Sarvey and Nate Bigford hit timely shots to extend the lead, and the Herders outscored Newcastle 14-6 in the second quarter to take a commanding 30-18 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Teddy Troftgruben caught fire, drilling three three-pointers and attacking the basket, but Glenrock’s defense held strong. The Herders matched Newcastle shot for shot, with Sarvey finishing with 14 points, all coming in the first three quarters, while Bigford and Jaxson Cornella chipped in with key baskets to keep the Dogies at bay.
Newcastle finished 10-of-17 from the free-throw line and connected on six three-pointers, including one each from Thatcher Troftgruben, Allen, and Colten Hathway. However, Glenrock’s efficiency proved to be the difference, as Bigford and Sarvey each hit two three-pointers, helping the Herders maintain control.
Foul trouble also played a role in the game, with Glenrock’s Ayden Moulton fouling out, but the Herders’ depth allowed them to maintain their lead. Despite shooting just 4-of-11 from the free-throw line, Glenrock’s balanced attack ensured their advancement in the tournament.
With the loss, Newcastle’s season comes to an end, while Glenrock moves on to face the loser of the Torrington-Douglas matchup for a shot at a state tournament berth.
