Cowboy up UW fans

T
he world needs more Cowboys and fewer armchair coaches.
On Saturday, our Cowboys played Boise State and the game was broadcast on ESPN. Not ESPN 2, and not some obscure channel that you have to stream by hooking your computer up to your TV via an HDMI cord.
It was national coverage against a team that is ranked 22nd in the nation and is in the running for a Cotton Bowl berth.
Wyoming has only defeated Boise once at home, and are 1-11 in the series. However, the Cowboys dominated for most of the contest, our defense was stifling, Tyler Vander Waal had his first start of the season on a national stage and performed admirably, even running in his first ever touchdown.
After a shaky start on the Broncos’ initial offensive drive where they scored within three minutes of the start of the game, the Cowboys settled in and had them on their heels for most of the contest.
In fact, they led for the most part. Boise was able to tie the game and then had an opportunity to win in regulation until the smothering Cowboy defense snagged an interception on a touchdown pass to give Wyoming a chance to close it out in
regulation.
That didn’t happen but the clear underdog pushed this game into overtime.
I was on the edge of my couch, long after I wanted to go to sleep, but I couldn’t tear myself away from the drama that was playing out.
In OT, Wyoming held Boise to a field goal and then got their turn on offense.
Long story short, it came down to the UW kicker being tasked with forcing the contest to double overtime. Unfortunately, he missed the 37-yard attempt wide right.
So the Pokes lost the game and their shot at being the Mountain West Champs.
It was certainly disappointing for UW fans, but it was one hell of a game executed by a team who was without their starting QB and was outmanned in many scenarios.
And yet, there was nothing but derision from “fans” in the aftermath of this heartbreaking loss.
While it may be a valid criticism that play calling on the last three plays of the game could be legit, I’m just so tired of everyone who sits in the stands or their couches verbally assaulting those who take on the responsibility of coaching any team, from little kids all the way to the pros.
Craig Bohl has done a pretty darn good job with the Pokes, yet he was the object of many an irate fan. I’m sure UW Offensive Coordinator Brent Vigen has some experience in his position and has some talent as well, or he wouldn’t be employed so to call him names and hurl hateful insults at him on social media after the loss was simply disgusting.
Yes, it was a bummer that Wyoming lost after playing so well, but it’s a lot easier to sit on the sidelines and judge in the wake of a loss than to stand in the midst of the action making quick decisions. Granted, these collegiate coaches get paid to take on that responsibility, but they are still just people and people make mistakes.
Cowboys do what’s right. Cowboys have integrity. Cowboys don’t hurl insults on social media. UW fans need to cowboy up.
