The First United Methodist Church recently held a benefit luncheon for the Weston County Senior Center to help raise money for roof repairs. According to Chris French, the luncheon raised $52,408. French is president of the United Methodist Women at the church.
Annually, the church holds a benefit luncheon for a group or organization that is in need in the community. According to French, members of the church hold a brainstorming session where they “throw out ideas” about who should benefit from the luncheon before the members vote.
“The senior center has been struggling to get the roof project done. They need money to get the project done,” French said.
She said that three years ago the luncheon also benefited the senior center.
“There are just so many activities there. We want to do what we can so the doors can remain open and they can provide services to the community,” French said.
Churches around the area contribute to the event, according to French, and the meal really becomes a community lunch.
“The Methodist Church ladies provide the casseroles since we are the hosting church. I make phone calls to other churches in the community to seek out donations of other food,” French said. “They essentially provide the bulk of the salads and desserts.”
This year’s lunch, featuring a variety of entrees, side dishes and desserts raised $2,408, thanks to the generous donations of those who enjoyed the meal, French said. One person donated $50,000 to bring the grand total to $52,408.
“The community is very generous in supporting whatever effort we have here at the church,” French said.
