If you’ve recently accepted Christ and are wondering where to start in your Bible study journey, you're not alone. Many new believers find themselves asking, "How do I study the Bible?" It can be overwhelming at first, but don't worry! The best place to start is simple and clear—the Book of John.

Why Start with the Book of John?

The Book of John is one of the four Gospels that tells the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. It’s a perfect starting point for new believers because it focuses on the person of Jesus Christ, his teachings, and his divine nature. By reading the Book of John, you’ll gain a foundational understanding of who Jesus is and what he did on earth.

In John 1:1-2, it says: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.”

This verse introduces Jesus as the Word—fully God and fully human—giving you a glimpse into his divine purpose and mission on earth. Throughout the Book of John, you will encounter Jesus in a way that builds your understanding of who He is, why He came, and what it means to believe in Him.

How to Study the Bible for Beginners

  1. Start Slow and Steady
Don't rush through the Bible. Take your time to understand each verse and passage. Starting with a chapter a day is a good pace. Reflect on what you read, and don't worry if you don’t understand everything right away.
  2. Pray Before You Read
Always begin your Bible study time with prayer. Ask God to open your heart and mind to understand His Word. The Holy Spirit will guide you as you read and reveal the deeper meanings behind the verses.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things...” (John 14:26)

  1. Avoid Books About the Bible (For Now)
While many Bible study guides and books about the Bible can be helpful later on, it’s best to start by reading the Bible itself. Books written by people are interpretations of God’s Word and can sometimes distract you from hearing directly from God through His Scripture. Let God teach you directly from His Word.
  2. Journal Your Thoughts
As you read, take notes or journal your thoughts. Write down verses that stand out to you, questions you may have, and any insights you receive. This will help you process what you are learning and build a deeper relationship with God through His Word.
  3. Ask Questions
It's okay to have questions as you read! Don't be afraid to ask God for understanding. You can also ask fellow believers or a pastor, but always be cautious and check that their answers align with Scripture.
  4. Choose a Good Bible Translation
For new believers, selecting the right Bible translation is important. Some translations are easier to understand, while others are more literal. The New American Standard Bible (NASB) is highly recommended for its accuracy and clarity. The English Standard Version (ESV) is another excellent choice, offering a balance between readability and faithfulness to the original text. The New Living Translation (NLT) is a good option if you're looking for something simpler to understand. Avoid translations that stray too far from the original meaning, and remember that no translation is perfect—each has its strengths.

What to Expect as You Read

As you begin your study, remember that the Bible is living and active. You might find some verses challenging or difficult to understand, and that’s okay! Keep reading, praying, and trusting that God will reveal the truth to you in His perfect timing.

In John 16:13, Jesus promised: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth...”

Trust that the Holy Spirit is with you, guiding you as you read and helping you understand God's Word more deeply.

Final Thoughts on Bible Study for Beginners

The most important part of Bible study is building a relationship with God through His Word. Start with the Book of John, take your time, and let God teach you directly. The more you read, the more you’ll understand, and the stronger your faith will grow.
