Aligning Denominational Doctrines With Scripture
Throughout history, religious denominations have developed unique doctrines and interpretations of scripture, shaping the beliefs and practices of their respective communities. While denominational identity can offer valuable insights and a sense of belonging, it's essential not to allow doctrinal interpretations to overshadow the primacy of scripture itself. Instead of viewing scripture through the lens of denominational doctrines, believers should approach their denominational teachings with a commitment to aligning them with the authoritative truths found in scripture.
At the heart of this approach is the recognition of scripture as the ultimate authority in matters of faith and practice. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, it is affirmed that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." This passage underscores the divine inspiration and inherent authority of scripture, positioning it as the standard against which all teachings and doctrines should be evaluated.
The danger of viewing scripture through the lens of denominational doctrines is that it can lead to selective interpretation and the imposition of preconceived theological frameworks onto the text. Rather than allowing scripture to speak for itself, believers may unconsciously filter it through the doctrinal lens of their denomination, potentially overlooking or misinterpreting passages that challenge their established beliefs.
A more faithful approach is to view denominational doctrines through the lens of scripture, allowing the biblical text to serve as the ultimate arbiter of truth. This requires humility, openness, and a willingness to reexamine cherished beliefs in light of scripture's teachings. As the Berean Jews demonstrated in Acts 17:11, believers should "receive the word with all readiness, and search the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so." This diligent study of scripture enables believers to discern the authenticity of their denominational doctrines and adjust them accordingly.
Furthermore, embracing a scriptural perspective over denominational dogma fosters unity among believers across denominational lines. When denominational doctrines are subordinated to the authority of scripture, the focus shifts from doctrinal differences to shared biblical truths. As Ephesians 4:3 reminds us, believers are called to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." By prioritizing the foundational truths of scripture, believers can find common ground and pursue a unity rooted in Christ.
