Your Bible Is Not God
A direct look at why the Bible is holy but not God, why Jesus alone is the Word made flesh, and how believers can honor Scripture without worshiping it.
The Bible is precious. Anyone who holds it, reads it, and trusts it knows that. The pages feel familiar. The words carry truth, promise, and warning. But as much as we love it, we have to say it plain. The Bible is not God. When we forget that, we slip from respect into something far more dangerous.
The Word in John one is not talking about a book. It is talking about a Person. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Then it says, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (John 1:1). The Word did not become a scroll. The Word did not become a bound copy with a ribbon marker. The Word became Jesus. Only Jesus shows us the Father. Only Jesus lived, died, rose, and ascended. Only Jesus is worthy of worship.
The truth is, the Scriptures were never meant to be the final stop. Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me” (John 5:39). The Bible points to Christ. It prepares the heart for Him. It teaches us to look for Him. The danger comes when people cling to the pages and miss the Person standing in front of them.
The Bible points to Him. The Spirit points back to Him. Nowhere in Scripture does the Bible tell you to worship it. It tells you to follow Christ. When we mix up the text with the One it points to, we drift into trouble. Call it whatever you want. It shows up the same way every time.
- We start using Scripture as a weapon.
We throw verses at people to win an argument. We fire off lines without love. We forget the point of God’s Word is to shape us, not make us look sharp. - We get caught up in being right.
We start chasing information and forget transformation. That is when Paul’s warning becomes real. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies (1 Corinthians 8:1). - We grow cold inside.
We quote without compassion. We study without surrender. We preach without the presence of the Lord. Then we wonder why faith feels hollow.
Jesus never handled Scripture the way we often do. When He quoted it, it was to show the heart of God, not to win a debate. He said things like, You have heard that it was said… but I say to you (Matthew 5:21–22). He fulfilled the Scriptures because He is the Word made flesh. He did not need to prove anything. Truth was already standing in front of them.
Think of the Bible like a wedding ring. It is a sign. A reminder. A symbol of something real and living. But you do not fall in love with the ring. You fall in love with the person it points to. The Bible points to Jesus. It is a witness, not the Savior.
So read it. Respect it. Learn from it. Let it correct you. But remember the simple truth. The Bible did not die for you. Jesus did. And He still speaks today, through the pages of Scripture and through the quiet places where only His Spirit can reach.
