The year starts here
As we turn the calendar to a new year, it is fitting to begin 2026 by recognizing the people who make Weston County not just a place on a map, but a community. The News Letter Journal is proud to congratulate Jen Womack as our 2025 Person of the Year and to thank all seven nominees who were willing to step forward, be seen and bear the burdens required to be difference-makers in our community.
This year’s nominees reflect the many ways service takes shape in Weston County. Some lead through their businesses, creating opportunity and stability. Others give their time through volunteer work, quietly filling gaps where help is needed most.
From beautifying Newcastle and other corners of the county to supporting local veterans, these individuals demonstrate that progress is built through action, not attention.
Being nominated is no small thing. It means your neighbors noticed. It means your efforts mattered enough that someone took the time to speak up.
That visibility takes courage, and so does the daily commitment to show up, serve and lead in a small community where work is often personal and impact is immediate.
We also want to thank those who were nominated but chose to decline the spotlight, as well as the many others who work hard every day without nomination or recognition. Their contributions are no less meaningful, and their humility does not go unnoticed.
Weston County would not be the same without these people. Our schools, businesses, nonprofits, neighborhoods and public spaces are stronger because of their efforts. Every one of them deserves a round of applause, and more importantly, our thanks.
As a community, let us carry this recognition forward. Thank the people you see making a difference. Support their work, and let us know so we can share their example with the community. And when the time comes, take a moment to nominate someone who deserves to be recognized.
The year starts here, and it starts with gratitude.
