LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/23/24) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team next heads to Colorado Mesa this weekend. The Cowboys and Cowgirls take on the Mavericks in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Itching to get back to racing, this will be the first meet back for the Cowboys since the Air Force Invite in early October. The Cowgirls are coming off a dominant home opener victory against conference opponent New Mexico and will look to carry over that momentum and energy into Saturday’s dual.

The Mavericks are nationally ranked in the CSCAA Division II Top 25 Dual Meet poll on both the men’s and women’s sides. The women are ranked 1st and received 244 points, while the men are ranked 6th and received 231 points. The Maverick women also took second at the 2024 NCAA Division II Championships this past year and the Maverick men have taken fifth at the last two NCAA Division II Championships.

Head coach Dave Denniston is expecting his squad to face some challenges against the Mavericks and anticipates that the races will be a lot closer than what they’ve been in the last couple meets.

“Their women’s team is a very good team, but I think that’s going to be a fun matchup head-to-head and I think our women are stacked pretty well against them,” Denniston said. “On the men’s side, it’s going to be a little more of a challenge because of depth. They have more swimmers on their men’s roster than we do, so we’re going to be playing a little bit against their depth.”

The Cowgirls and Cowboys have been up for the challenge against the Mavericks in years past, having defeated them the last two seasons, and they will look to rise to the occasion once again on Saturday.

Denniston said, “As always, this is a meet that both of our teams really step up for and we usually see some fast swimming and I would expect nothing less this week.”

Following Saturday, the Cowgirls will head to Greeley, Colorado, to face off against Front Range foe Northern Colorado on Friday, November 1 at 3 p.m. Wyoming then has a quick turnaround as both the men and women host Air Force, a Mountain West and Western Athletic Conference opponent, at Laramie High School starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.
