Wyoming Opens Season in Record-Breaking Fashion

LARAMIE, Wyo. (December 7, 2024) – The University of Wyoming track and field program put up 19 Top-3 finishes and nine personal bests while seniors Daniel Reynolds and Ryker Holtzen had record-breaking days at the Power Meet and the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, on Saturday.

Power Meet

Reynolds kicked off the indoor season with a bang throwing a personal best of 75’-1” (28.89 meters) in the weight throw. His mark set the school, facility and Mountain West record, all set by former Cowboy and Olympian Jason Gervais in the 2000 season.

Reynolds also saw action in the shot put. He posted a third-place finish behind junior thrower Cam Burkett who finished second. Burkett threw a distance of 59’-8 ¼” (18.19 meters) while Reynolds posted a mark of 55’-5 ½” (16.90 meters).

In the women’s long jump, senior Sadie McMullen took first in her final meet before joining the USA Bobsled World Cup Team. McMullen jumped a distance of 20’-3” (6.17 meters). Freshman jumper Taliah Morris grabbed third in the long jump with a mark of 19’-3 ¼” (5.87 meters) to tie No. 7 in school indoor history.

Junior jumper Remar Pitter, an All-American last season, finished second in the men’s long jump with his mark of 23’-6” (7.16 meters).

In the Women’s high jump, freshman Koi Adderley cleared a height of 5’-5” (1.65 meters) for second in her first collegiate meet.

Junior Elayna Chafee jumped to first in the women’s triple jump. Her mark of 38’-10 ¾” (11.86 meters) was good enough for No. 4 in school indoor history.

Other field event finishes were junior thrower Kaitlyn Gallo with a mark of 49’-3” (14.95 meters) in the weight throw, sophomore thrower Kais Kimuli with a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 46’-9 ¼” (14.26 meters) and freshmen Teagan Becker and Shelby Ekwall with marks of 44’-3” (13.49 meters) and 42’-9 ¾” (13.05 meters) in the shot put.

The running events started with women’s 55-meter hurdles. In the finals, senior Gabby Drube took first with a personal-best time of 6.17. Sophomore Ava Morgan also set a personal best in the 55-meter hurdles with a finish of 8.37.

Senior Jaheim Ferguson finished third in the 55-meter hurdles and ran to a personal-best time of 7.67 in the event.

In the women’s 55-meter dash, Morris ran to second with a personal-best time of 6.91. Senior sprinter Joan Easter also recorded a personal best in the 55-meter dash with her time of 7.23.

Wyoming took over the 200-meter dash as the only competitors in the men’s and women’s fields. The Cowgirls saw one personal best in the event with sophomore Charlotte Ward running a time of 27.42.

In the longest distance of the meet, three Wyoming runners posted Top-3 times in the 600-yard run. On the women’s side, freshman Eva Dellorco finished second with a time of 1:27.55 while senior Paige Sefried took third with her finishing time of 1:27.57, a personal best. For the men, Bradley Ekstrom won the event, crossing the line at 1:13.52.

Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener

In Boston, senior Asefa Wetzel started off the action for Wyoming in the men’s 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:18.02.

In the women’s 5,000-meter run, senior Kylie Simshauser led the Cowgirls with a time of 16:22.85, the second-fastest time in school indoor history and a personal best. Senior Abigail Whitman shortly followed, crossing the line at 16:39.21. Graduate Marina Trave Ferrer finished next for the Cowgirls with her time of 16:54.22. Senior Leah Christians finished out the women’s day in Boston with her finish of 17:23.12 in the 5,000 meters.

On the men’s side of the 5,000-meters, senior Holtzen broke the indoor school record with his personal-best time of 13:41.39, a time good enough for 45th out of 187 finishers. Junior Jacob White finished with another personal-best time of 13:55.87 to rise to No. 3 in school history. Senior Gus McIntyre crossed the line next with a time of 14:22.22 and senior Trevor Stephen closed Wyoming’s day with his finish of 15:01.86.

Wyoming will be back after winter break when they head to Boulder, Colo., for the Colorado Classic, Jan. 17-18.
