CHEYENNE (WNE) — State Rep. John Eklund, R-Cheyenne, died Friday morning following a battle with cancer.

He was 74 years old. Local lawmakers described Eklund as a true Wyomingite who was kind, respectful and had a wealth of knowledge.

Born and raised in Wyoming, Eklund spent most of his life working as a farmer and rancher in eastern Laramie County. He earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Wyoming, and was first elected to the Legislature in 2010, representing House District 10, serving since 2011.

“Representative Eklund’s work on agricultural issues and on protecting Wyoming’s producers has been very important for our state,” Secretary of State Chuck Gray wrote in a statement released on Friday . “It was an honor to be able to serve with him in the Legislature and work with him on a number of issues. I’m continuing to pray for Representative Eklund’s entire family.”

Gov. Mark Gordon also released a statement on Eklund’s passing Friday.

“He was all that Wyoming could have wanted in a leader and a legislator. A good man with the right values and a strong work ethic,” Gordon wrote. “Above all, John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Wyoming is better for John’s years of service, and his loss will be felt across the state he cared for so deeply.”

Gordon has ordered the Wyoming state flag to remain at half-staff at the Wyoming State Capitol and in Laramie County until sunset on the date of Eklund’s internment. (It has been at half-staff since the passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney on Nov. 3.)

To fill the vacant seat before the legislative session kicks off on Feb. 9, Laramie County GOP precinct members within HD 10 must meet to vote to select three nominees to fill the seat. Of those nominees, the Laramie County commissioners will select one.
