Wyoming Freedom Caucus releases position on data centers
CHEYENNE (WNE) — Members of the Wyoming Freedom Caucus have spent the last several weeks working on a comprehensive legislative package dealing with the issue of data centers, and the caucus on Tuesday released its position, as follows:
Defend Wyoming ratepayers: The WYFC supports legislation prohibiting data centers and other large power users from burdening ratepayers with increased costs.
Protect Wyoming water: The WYFC supports legislation to prioritize and protect agricultural water users and to study data center water use.
Everyone should operate on a level playing field: The WYFC supports legislation to prohibit incentives and subsidies offered to big-tech conglomerates, including repealing the sales tax exemption enjoyed by big tech companies.
The WYFC supports legislation that requires all proposed data centers undergo the industrial siting process by closing the “business park” loophole.
No more secret real estate transactions or backroom dealing: The WYFC supports legislation to prohibit nondisclosure agreements signed by public officials.
Mandate transparency in energy and water consumption: The WYFC supports legislation mandating that data centers report their energy and water consumption statistics to the Legislature’s Joint Minerals Committee in order to better inform communities and regulators.
No AI-aided surveillance: The WYFC supports legislation to ban “Flock cameras” and other AI-aided surveillance tools that rely upon data centers to operate.
The Wyoming Freedom Caucus encourages the people of Wyoming to engage with their locally elected officials, including city/town councils and county commissions, on this topic.
