Over the next 10 years, an estimated $24 billion will transfer between generations in Wyoming. The Wyoming Community Foundation plans to empower a new generation of donors.

[Laramie, WY]— The Wyoming Community Foundation (WYCF) proudly announces the release of the "Wyoming Transfer of Wealth Report," which predicts an estimated $24 billion will transfer between generations in Wyoming over the next decade. The report was prepared in collaboration with the Center for Business and Economic Analysis at Laramie County Community College.

“This report emphasizes the immense potential we have to strengthen Wyoming’s communities,” said Samin Dadelahi, President & CEO of WYCF. “Imagine what might be possible if just 5% of that wealth–more than $1 billion–was reinvested in Wyoming communities. Through charitable giving, 5% of your estate could help transform senior centers, preschools, libraries, pathways, outdoor spaces, wildlife, museums, 4-H, higher education, animal shelters, and community beautification–or whatever you care about.”

WYCF is launching the "5 to Thrive" initiative, inspiring Wyoming residents to leave just 5% of their assets to their communities to ensure a lasting legacy for future generations. If Wyoming’s nonprofit organizations can capture a portion of this wealth and build permanent, invested funds, we can benefit communities today and meet future needs.

Key Findings:

The report reveals significant insights into Wyoming’s wealth transfer.

  • Wyoming households hold over $173 billion in wealth today.
  • Over $24 billion is projected to transfer between generations in the next 10 years.
  • Over the next 50 years, $210 billion in wealth will change hands across the state.

While this wealth will transfer generationally for years to come, the next 10 years are crucial, especially in rural Wyoming communities where inherited wealth tends to leave with the next generation. We want people to think about giving back to the communities that raised their children, supported their businesses, and offered a great place to live. Once wealth leaves our communities, this opportunity leaves with it. The Wyoming Community Foundation’s initiative is focused on keeping that wealth in the state to help communities thrive.

“5 to Thrive” Initiative:

  • Encourage Wyoming residents to commit 5% of their wealth to charity to invest in communities.
  • Provide free resources for communities and nonprofit organizations, such as the estimated transfer of wealth for each county, will-planning templates, and charitable giving/planning support to get started.
  • Host educational events and presentations statewide to raise awareness about planned giving and the transfer of wealth.

WYCF is calling on all Wyoming residents, nonprofits, and businesses to join the “5 to Thrive” initiative and seize the opportunity for charitable giving to improve our quality of life now and in the future.

Join Us and Act:

Build a culture of philanthropy in Wyoming by leaving 95% of your wealth to those you love, and 5% to your community. With your help, we are paving the way for vibrant, healthy and long-lasting communities. This new resource, now fully developed in and for Wyoming, is a long-term strategy for building community. Not only is WYCF encouraging residents to reach out directly to staff to learn more, but WYCF also is encouraging people across the state to reach out to their own favorite nonprofits to decide to leave a gift in a will or trust.
