CASPER (WNE) — The Wyoming Department of Transportation announced upgrades are to be made to driver services operations this summer.

The agency’s Revenue Information System — implemented in 1986 — is used by roughly more than 1,000 people each day to issue driver licenses, compile driver records and manage driving privileges after legal actions from commercial driving penalties or convictions like driving impaired, according to a WYDOT news release.

The system used by law enforcement and government programs around the Equality State became increasingly difficult to maintain.

“Our new software, MAX, will be much more efficient for Driver Services employees and for the citizens of Wyoming,” said Driver Services Program Manager Misty Zimmerman.

Wyoming lawmakers gave WYDOT the green light to pursue a new software system.

The total cost to upgrade RIS to the new system is about $20 million.

Upgrades are also coming to MAX and the public-facing arm of MAX, oneWYO.

OneWYO will offer many online self-service options including renewing a driver license, ordering a driving record and scheduling an appointment for a driving test, among other services.

WYDOT officials hope the changes will mean shorter lines for the public needing to go into a driver services office.

“We all know the stereotypes commonly associated with visiting ‘the DMV’,” Zimmerman said. “MAX and oneWYO are our latest tools to fight those stereotypes in Wyoming.”

MAX and oneWYO are expected to go live later this summer.
