BROOKINGS, South Dakota (2/1/25) – The University of Wyoming wrestling team got off to a slow start Saturday night and couldn’t recover inside First Bank & Trust Arena. No. 11 South Dakota State jumped out to a double-digit lead and never looked back en route to a 31-3 victory.

The Cowboys fell to 9-6 on the season, 3-3 in Big 12 action, and their four-match win streak came to an end. The Jackrabbits improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

No. 10 Joey Novak (197) was one of the few bright spots for the Pokes. He defeated Thomas Dineen in sudden victory, 7-4, to improve to 16-3 on the year. Novak has still yet to lose since returning from a mid-season injury.

Riley Davis (174) also scrapped hard with No. 8 Cade DeVos. He fell by decision, 2-0, but nearly had a reversal before the final buzzer sounded that would have forced sudden victory.

No. 18 Cole Brooks (141), No. 20 Jared Hill (157) and Sam Mitchell (HWT) were also only one takedown away from winning or forcing overtime. Brooks dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 15 Julian Tagg, Hill lost by decision, 5-3, to No. 18 Cole Siebrecht and Mitchell fell via decision, 7-4, to No. 24 Luke Rasmussen.

South Dakota State earned bonus points in three bouts. Its other two wins were by decision.

Wyoming returns home for its tallest home task to date. The Cowboys host No. 21 West Virginia on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. inside the UniWyo Sports Complex.
