Willow Creek Fire now at 40% containment
AFTON (WNE) —The Willow Creek Fire south of Smoot is now considered 40% contained as of Tuesday September 2, 2025. The area of the fire is at 4,065 acres, and officials with the Bridger-Teton expect full containment of the fire by September 15.
Crews are continuing a direct approach to the fire’s containment. Steady progress was made, gaining more ground along the eastern and southern perimeter. Crews are spiking out along the fire’s edge to be more readily available to construct handline and continue mopping up. Helicopters are working with crews on the ground to address areas with heat and stop potential growth of the fire.
After aerial assessments and collaborations with Incident Management Team, the evacuation zone from mile post 75 south (vicinity of Gomms Pond Lane) to Salt Pass has been lowered to “SET” status.
Residents west of Highway 89 from Reeves-Schwab Lane South to Gomms Pond are also in “SET” status and should be prepared for potential evacuation should the “GO” order be given. The Code Red notification will be initiated by Lincoln County Homeland Security & Emergency Management.
Though the evacuation level has changed, there is still a forest closure for Grey River District and Kemmerer District.

Travelers on Highway 89 should be cautious of fire vehicles and equipment in the area and are asked to not pull over or park on the side of the road to view the fire area, which could pose safety hazards to emergency personnel.
