Who Are You When No One Is Watching
Proverbs 15:3 says, "The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good." This verse sets the stage for understanding the overarching theme of God's omnipresence and His observation of our actions, whether they are good or bad. It underscores the idea that there is no place where God's eyes cannot see, no moment when His attention is diverted elsewhere.
Psalm 139:1-4 further emphasizes this concept: "O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether." This passage highlights God's intimate knowledge of us, including our thoughts, actions, and words, whether spoken or unspoken.
In Matthew 6:1-4, Jesus speaks about the importance of sincerity in our actions, especially when it comes to acts of righteousness such as giving to the needy: "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."
This passage aligns with Proverbs 15:3 by highlighting the importance of genuine motives and actions, irrespective of whether others are watching. It emphasizes that our focus should be on pleasing God rather than seeking the approval or recognition of people.
Ultimately, Proverbs 15:3, along with these supporting Scriptures, calls us to live with integrity and sincerity, knowing that God sees and evaluates not just our outward actions but also the intentions of our hearts. It encourages us to cultivate a character that is consistent, honest, and rooted in a desire to honor God in all aspects of our lives, whether in public or in private.
