When the Path Starts Drying Up
A direct look at how believers drift from Christ without noticing, why the heart grows dry, and how the Shepherd still brings wandering people home. A clear, Scripture-based warning and invitation to return.
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” 2 Corinthians 13:5
There are times when a person doesn’t run from God. They just drift. One step at a time. Nothing dramatic. Nothing loud. No open rebellion. Just a quiet pull away from the One who once held their whole heart.
It starts soft. A skipped prayer. A cold Bible. A sin left alone instead of confessed. You tell yourself everything is fine because nothing feels wrong. But a hard heart never feels its own hardness.
Jesus told a parable about this. He said some seed fell on rocky places. It grew fast, it looked alive, but it had no root. When the heat came it withered. The soil didn’t change in a day. It changed little by little until nothing could grow there anymore.
“The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. Yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution occurs because of the word, immediately he falls away.”
Matthew 13:20–21
God doesn’t walk away from us. But we can walk away from Him. And we often do it without realizing it. The path from the cross is green at the start, but the farther a person moves from Christ, the drier it gets. The ground cracks. The joy fades. The peace thins out. The Bible that once fed your soul lies untouched, buried under everything the world cares about.
The Lord warned Israel about this same thing.
“My people have committed two evils. They have abandoned Me, the fountain of living waters, and dug for themselves broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
Jeremiah 2:13
A believer can do that too. We chase things that cannot hold us. We sip from empty wells. We try to live on what cannot give life.
But here’s the truth. If you are still breathing, you are not too far gone. The ground may be dry, but Christ can make it green again. The shepherd still goes after wandering sheep.
“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it?”
Luke 15:4
If the Spirit is stirring you right now, that is mercy. That is God calling you back before the ground under your feet turns to dust. Deal with whatever He puts His finger on. Sin only robs you. Confession restores you. And Christ still forgives completely.
The path back is simple. It’s turning around. It’s going home. And the One who waits for you is the same One who died for you.
