What Romans Answers That No One Else Can
Why did Paul write the book of Romans? This post explains Paul’s purpose in writing Romans, the problem it addresses, and how it clearly lays out salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Paul wrote Romans to explain the gospel clearly and completely. Not to settle a local church fight, not to correct one specific sin, but to lay out what God has done for sinful people and why salvation can only come by faith.
Paul had never been to Rome when he wrote it. The church there was made up of both Jews and Gentiles, and tension was brewing between them. Jews were tempted to lean on the Law. Gentiles were tempted to think the Law never mattered at all. Paul writes to both and levels the ground.
The main problem he addresses is this. How can a righteous God justify sinful people?
Paul answers that question step by step.
First, he shows that everyone is guilty. Gentiles are guilty because they rejected the truth they had. “They are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). Jews are guilty because they had the Law and broke it. “There is none righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10). No group gets a pass.
Then Paul explains justification. “But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested” (Romans 3:21). Righteousness does not come from keeping rules. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ. “For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law” (Romans 3:28).
Paul uses Abraham to prove this is not new. “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness” (Romans 4:3). Salvation has always been by faith, not effort.
He then explains what salvation produces. Peace with God. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). New life. Freedom from slavery to sin. “Sin shall not be master over you” (Romans 6:14).
Paul addresses the Law honestly. The Law is holy, but it cannot save. “I would not have come to know sin except through the Law” (Romans 7:7). The Law reveals sin. Christ delivers from it.
Romans 8 shows life in the Spirit. “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). This chapter answers fear, suffering, and assurance. Nothing can separate believers from God’s love.
Chapters 9 through 11 deal with Israel. God has not failed. His promises stand. Salvation was never about ethnicity but mercy. “So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy” (Romans 9:16).
The final chapters show how truth affects daily life. Living sacrifices. Humility. Love. Submission to authority. Unity in the body. “Present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice” (Romans 12:1).
In short, Paul wrote Romans to do this.
To explain the gospel.
To unite believers under truth.
To remove all boasting.
To show that salvation is God’s work from start to finish.
Romans answers the biggest question any person can ask.
How can a sinner be made right with God?
And Paul leaves no doubt.
By grace. Through faith. In Christ alone.
