Weston County 4-H hosted its annual Achievement Day awards dinner on Sunday, October 13, at the Weston County Fairgrounds Event Center. Over one hundred people attended the event to enjoy a meal together and watch 4-H members and leaders be recognized for their outstanding achievements for the 2018-2019 year. Members were awarded gold, silver, and green levels of membership based on their participation in events, community service, leadership, and completion of a record book demonstrating their learning goals and how they worked to complete these goals through hands-on projects. Members and leaders were also nominated for special recognition and received certificates and prizes. Some of the special awards included Outstanding Teen Leader, 4-H Heart and Soul Award, Outstanding 1st Year 4-H Member, Outstanding 4-H Leader, Outstanding 4-H Alumnus, and more.
The Weston County Commissioners, Tony Barton, Ed Wagoner, Nathan Todd, Tracy Hunt, and Marty Ertman, were recognized as the 2019 Weston County Friend of 4-H for their support of the program this past year. It was announced the 2020 Crook/Weston County 4-H Camp would be held at the Mallo Camp facilities June 19-21st and that chaperones were going to be needed. The 4-H shooting sports members were recognized as well based on their county shoot scores throughout the shooting sports seasons in all of the disciplines including pistol, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, and archery.
Weston County 4-H also paid tribute to fellow 4-H member Shayna Ritthaler with a memorial slideshow with photos of her as a member of the Weston County 4-H family. Cards and letters of support were also accepted and given to the Ritthaler family, who were in attendance. Shayna participated in fashion and fabric, showed livestock, helped at 4-H Camp, and was a great junior leader and friend. She will be missed by many in the program and community.
