Ways That a Neurologist Can Help You With Your Health

Hopefully, you’ll never experience a health condition that requires the assistance and knowledge of a neurologist. But if a doctor provides you or a person you know with a follow-up reference or consultation with a neurologist, be at ease. Neurologists spend many years in med school learning how to be health care providers with a specialty in conditions, diseases, and other things that affect the brain and nervous system. When you see a neurologist, you’ll be well cared for. Here are some ways that a neurologist can help you with your health.
Testing and Diagnosis
When a patient consults with a doctor about chronic pain, migraines, tremors, spasms, and other unusual and out of nowhere motor conditions, the doctor will run certain tests to ascertain what might be affecting them. Sometimes, they find the solution, but occasionally, a doctor might be unable to make a diagnosis. At this point, the patient may receive a referral to a neurologist. A neurologist will run the same tests and a few others to determine if the patient is experiencing a neurological disorder. The neurologist, however, will have a more specific idea about what to look for and may recognize symptoms a general practitioner rarely encounters.
Pains and Migraines
Here’s another one of the many ways that a neurologist can help you with your health. Neurologists are particularly good at treating and providing relief from chronic pain and migraines. While migraines aren’t necessarily curable, they can be ameliorated with treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and others. In general, however, neurologists can identify types of migraines and advise ways to prevent them, such as by avoiding environmental triggers like lights, noise, and more. They can also prescribe medications to lessen the unpleasant symptoms of various chronic pains and migraines.
Epilepsy and Seizures
Seizures are a serious condition that can manifest through symptoms like muscle contractions, staring and blackouts, difficulty speaking, and others. Some seizures are a result of epilepsy, which a neurologist can diagnose through testing. Some seizures are not related to epilepsy and can result from diet, stress, cardiac issues, and the like, and some seizures are induced by, say, a tumor, a stroke, or a similar issue with the brain. Once more, neurologists can treat these with medication and therapy and make recommendations for other ways to deal with them.
Neurological Conditions and Diseases
Neurologists may not be able to cure diseases and conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and others, but they have vast experience in treating them and providing medication that can reduce the effects of their symptoms. With a neurologist looking after you, it’s possible to have a better chance at life and dealing with neurological disease than it is without one.
