In Ecclesiastes, we find a powerful reminder of the enduring nature of God’s work: “I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear Him” (Ecclesiastes 3:14). Here, we’re given insight into God’s timeless wisdom. His creation, His plan, and His Word are complete and unchanging, needing no revision or improvement. Because His work is eternal, our response is to approach Him with a deep sense of reverence, recognizing that His wisdom holds true for every generation.

In 1 Corinthians 10:21, Paul addresses this call to reverence and warns against divided loyalty: “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” When we try to mix our devotion to God with influences that oppose Him, we dilute our faith. If God’s Word is perfect, then our loyalty to Him must be just as firm. Our devotion cannot be split or compromised, for He calls us to serve Him alone with a pure heart.

Jesus Himself, in Mark 13:23, reassures us of the completeness of His revelation: “But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.” Here, Christ emphasizes that He has already revealed all we need to know. His words are sufficient, providing guidance for all times and all situations. By saying, “I have told you everything,” Jesus affirms that nothing can or should be added to the truths He has given. Our part is to remain alert, trusting in His instructions without feeling the need to add or take away from them.

This idea is repeated throughout Scripture. In Revelation 22:18-19, we find a solemn warning to anyone who would alter God’s Word: “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.” This powerful statement emphasizes the seriousness with which God regards His Word. Any attempt to add to or take away from His truth brings consequences, underscoring that His message is holy, whole, and complete.

God’s truth stands perfect and needs no modification. His Word was given to be a full guide, equipped with everything necessary for us to walk in His ways. The purity of His message is meant to stand unaltered across all generations, remaining fully effective and relevant just as it is. We are called to trust His Word without attempting to reshape it, knowing that it is exactly as He intended. Through these verses, we understand that His Word is enough—perfect in its wisdom, complete in its guidance, and powerful to accomplish His purposes.

Deuteronomy 4:2 carries the same caution as Moses instructs Israel not to add to or take away from God’s commandments. These laws were given by God for His people’s good, designed to bring life and blessing. Altering them would only lead to harm, reflecting our failure to trust in His divine wisdom. God’s commands were given out of His love for us, and they are exactly as they should be.

James 1:17 further affirms that “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” God’s character and His gifts—including His Word—are perfect. His truth does not change with time or circumstance; it is as consistent as He is. We can trust that His instructions are as relevant and valuable today as they were when first given.

Psalm 119:89 declares, “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.” This verse captures the unchanging nature of God’s truth, which is firmly established and unaffected by human opinion. We don’t need to alter it; rather, we need to let it alter us, bringing our lives in line with His eternal wisdom.

Taken together, these verses reveal the incredible consistency of God’s character and His Word. He has given us all we need, in advance, to live in harmony with His will. Our calling is to accept His truth as it is, without compromise, knowing that His wisdom is as perfect as He is. In response, we are invited to live with undivided loyalty to Him, honoring His Word with the reverence it deserves.
