The Torn Veil

When Jesus died, the temple veil tore from top to bottom—God’s way of showing that the barrier between Him and man was gone. Through Christ, every believer can now enter God’s presence with confidence.

Matthew 27:50–51 – “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.”

The following is a fictional account imagined from the perspective of a temple priest at the moment of Christ’s death.

He stood there, stunned. One moment the incense rose quiet and steady, the next—a sound like thunder. The great veil that hid the Most Holy Place shuddered and split, tearing from top to bottom. The priest froze, heart pounding, eyes wide as the curtain fell open before him.

He knew no man could reach that high. No knife, no hand, no earthquake had done this. The air itself felt different—holy, alive, yet terrifying. He should have fallen to his knees, but fear rooted him. What did this mean? Had God left? Had His presence come out?

He didn’t yet know that, outside those walls, the true sacrifice had just been made. The Lamb had died, and the barrier was gone. But in that instant, staring at the torn veil, he felt it—the shift of eternity in a single rip of fabric.

That veil had stood for centuries, separating man from the presence of God. It was a reminder that sin still stood between them. When it tore, God Himself declared the way open.

No more priests. No more sacrifices. Now, every believer could come boldly—not because they earned it, but because Jesus had.

The tearing of the veil wasn’t destruction—it was invitation. Jesus Himself became the veil. His body was torn so ours could be healed. God’s presence wasn’t locked behind a curtain anymore. It now lives in every heart made new through Christ.

Hebrews 10:19–20 –
“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, through His flesh.”
