JACKSON (WNE)  — Levels of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, were “very high” from Aug. 17 to 23 in Teton County, according to federal data.

Travis Riddell, director of the county’s health department, said that wastewater sampling and hospital admissions indicate that Jackson is currently seeing more COVID than is typical. But this summer so far seems “lighter” than last, he added.

This year, St. John’s Health admitted five COVID-positive patients in the 60 days before Aug. 23, Riddell said. That’s down from 30 in the same period last year.

St. John’s has admitted three COVID-positive patients since Aug. 23, hospital officials said. Riddell said that marked a “pretty big week” for COVID at the hospital by 2025 standards.

“Perhaps between that and the wastewater trending upward a bit, we have yet to see the peak of our summer surge,” Riddell said.
