The Weston County 4-H Shooting Sports program celebrated an outstanding season on June 17 with its annual awards dinner, bringing together youth, families, volunteers and community partners for an evening of recognition and appreciation. Held in Newcastle, the event honored the 76 youth who participated across all seven shooting disciplines in 2025 — a record that speaks volumes about the strength of the program and the dedication of its volunteers.
The evening kicked off with a meal, followed by the presentation of awards for each discipline. Participants were recognized for their achievements in air rifle, air pistol, .22 rifle, .22 pistol, shotgun singles, shotgun handicap, muzzleloader, archery blue face and archery 3D.
A key highlight of the evening was recognizing the backbone of the program — its volunteers. More than 17 adult coaches donated countless hours to ensure that youth could train safely and successfully in each discipline.
“We are incredibly grateful for their time, talent and mentorship,” said Persche, Weston County 4-H educator. “They not only ensure safety and skills development, but also instill confidence, responsibility and a love of learning in our youth.”
Community support continues to play a major role in the program’s success, and the Upton Gun Club, Newcastle Sportsman’s Club and Cambria Bowhunters provide range access and event support. In addition, the NRA Foundation awarded a grant this year for supplies, ammunition and custom T-shirts for all participants. Doug Keierleber also donated a .50 caliber rifle to support the growing muzzleloader discipline.
As results were announced, youth were awarded for placing in their respective age groups and events, with donated prizes including gun cases, RTIC mugs, ear protection, arrow quivers and duffle bags. Community sponsors made it possible
to provide these high-quality awards, with each donor recognized in the evening’s program.
The final awards of the evening were the Top Shot honors, given to the highest-scoring individual in each age division.
Youth were encouraged to consider competing at the Wyoming State Shoot, which takes place July 10–13 in Douglas. Weston County 4-H has a proud tradition of strong performance at the state level, and many of this year’s awardees are expected to represent the county well.
As the evening wrapped up, attendees were invited to write thank-you notes to donors and partners — an annual tradition that reminds everyone that success in 4-H is powered by community.
“Tonight wasn’t just about competition — it was about the dedication, growth and resilience our youth have shown all season,” Persche said. “It is thanks to the volunteers, families and community partners who make this program possible. Your support is what truly makes the difference.”
