CHEYENNE (WNE) — Taco John’s International, the fast-food company that began in Cheyenne in 1969 as a tiny taco stand, has officially moved its corporate headquarters to the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area.

The headquarters was previously located in Cheyenne at 808 W. 20th St.

The change has been taking place gradually over the past five years, said Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dale Steenbergen, who said he didn’t have any additional information about the move out of the capital city.

According to previous reporting by the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, former Taco John’s CEO Jim Creel announced the plan for the new franchise support center in Minnesota on Dec. 2, 2019. It was slated to open the following March.

The reason for the new offices, according to the WTE article, was to house franchisee-oriented operations like marketing, and research and development.

Creel had said reaching the Midwest stores was inefficient and involved a lot of travel for employees. The move allowed for more interaction with stores near Minneapolis.

At the time of the 2019 announcement, Creel said he had no plans to move Taco John’s headquarters out of Wyoming. However, Creel retired in January of 2024, and current CEO Heather Neary took over in February 2024. (Creel declined to comment for this story.)

The former Taco John’s headquarters location in Cheyenne is now being occupied by WyoLotto, the Wyoming Lottery Corporation, which began operating in 2013. It was formerly located downtown at 1620 Central Ave., Suite 100.

Taco John’s corporate officials hadn’t responded to requests for comment from the Wyoming Tribune Eagle by publication time.

Taco John’s currently has five restaurants operating in Cheyenne.
