LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/18/24) – The University of Wyoming swim team is set to compete at the Colorado Mesa Invite while the Wyoming dive team is headed to the Southern Methodist University Invitational Wednesday through Saturday of this week.

The swimmers will be competing against the likes of Northern Arizona, Utah, Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa. Head coach Dave Denniston is confident in his team’s ability and training so far and is anticipating some fast times from his swimmers against some solid competition.

“I think the team has been doing a lot preparing and this is just a good opportunity for them to wear the fast suits and shave down and see how fast they can go,” Denniston said. “There will be some good competition, Northern Arizona on the women’s side has won the WAC Championship the last eight years in a row it seems like, so they have some great swimmers. I know Utah is going to bring some of their swimmers. There’s going to be some good competition there, but I think overall we’re just looking forward to seeing how we can do and how our preparation up to this point has really set us up for the rest of the season.”

The divers’ skills will be tested against competitors from North Texas, Hawaii, Drury, BYU, UNC Chapel Hill and SMU. Junior Alicia Gonzalez has been dominating the springboards for the Cowgirls and has been named the Mountain West Diver of the Week three times already this season. Head dive coach Mark Murdock is looking forward to seeing how his divers stack up against some bigger competition that Wyoming normally doesn’t face.

“We’re looking to see how we compete against some big schools,” Murdock said. “North Texas has a couple of really good divers, SMU and BYU always have stunning teams. We do even have UNC Chapel Hill and Drury University coming. It’s going to be exciting since it’s a lot of schools we don’t typically see, so that’ll be good for our divers. I’m hoping Alicia Gonzalez does well because she’ll have some big competition there, so we’ll see how she handles that. On the men’s side, we’re looking for Jonah Mann to stand out as well.”

After the Colorado Mesa and SMU Invites, the Wyoming swimming and diving teams are next in action at the UNLV Invite on December 16-18.
