State shooting complex approved to lease state land south of Cody
POWELL (WNE) — The Wyoming State Shooting Complex is officially approved to lease the more than 2,000 acres of state land south of Cody planned for its use.
The State Board of Land Commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved a 75-year lease for the complex with the joint powers board being formed to oversee the complex.
The core area of the facility will be in the immediate vicinity of the event center, which, according to supporting documents, will be a large facility designed to assemble groups for competitive events with over 500 participants.
A majority of the shooting facilities for the nine distinct venues will be within a zone of 150 acres, including pistol bays, trap and skeet ranges, an indoor archery and air rifle range, and a modern technology range.
According to the report, these facilities require excavation, roadways and pavilions for sun and weather protection. Other ranges, placed throughout the complex will have less of a physical presence. These venues will have a pavilion structure, shooting stations and the targets on the landscape.
“We put our best foot forward, because we recognize the power a state shooting complex can bring to Park County and the state,” said James Klessens, Forward Cody CEO and a leader in the group bringing the complex to Cody. “Nobody has the landscape that we have … We know when we have the improvements in place it’s going to be a winner.”
