State certifies three write-in candidates for Legislature
CHEYENNE (WNE) — The Wyoming State Canvassing Board met Wednesday to certify the 2024 August primary results, including three Democratic write-in candidates for state Legislature.
To be certified, write-in candidates must receive at least 25 write-in votes, they must be a registered member of the party on the day of the election, and they must receive a significant number of votes to affect the result of the election, per Wyoming state statute.
Larry Alwin received 27 write-in votes in House District 28, which covers Meeteetse, Thermopolis and Shoshoni. Alwin will face incumbent Republican John Winter, who received 1,707 votes in August, in the November general election.
Martha Wright received 54 write-in votes in HD 29, which covers Sheridan. Wright will face incumbent Republican Ken Pendergraft, who ran uncontested in August, in the November general election.
Carmen Whitehead received 26 write-in votes in HD 60, which covers Green River. Whitehead will face Republican Marlene Brady, who defeated incumbent Tony Niemiec with 567 votes, in the November general election.
Write-in candidates will have five days to accept their nomination.
The deadline to petition as an independent candidate was Monday at 5 p.m., and county clerks have until Sept. 5 to certify all candidates.
The board unanimously voted to certify the three write-in candidates; Republican John Barrasso and Democrat Scott Morrow as U.S. Senate candidates; Republican Harriet Hageman and Democrat Kyle Cameron for U.S. representative candidates, 15 state Senate races and 62 state House races.
