Stage 2 Fire Restrictions to be Lifted on Black Hills National Forest

Custer, S.D., Oct. 31, 2024 — Stage 2 fire restrictions on the Black Hills National Forest will be lifted Friday, November 1, 2024, at 12:01 AM, MST. 

The special order put in place on October 4, 2024, prohibiting use of open fire on all National Forest System lands administered by the Black Hills National Forest will be terminated. 

Due to cooler temperatures and increased moisture, Black Hills National Forest Supervisor Shawn Cochren signed the termination notice removing the special order.

Although cooler weather and recent moisture has lessened the fire danger, conditions are still dry. Forest visitors should continue safe practices to help prevent unwanted, human-caused fires.

Stage 1 fire restrictions on the South Dakota side of the Black Hills National Forest remain in effect and are in place year-round. Stage 1 fire restrictions prohibit building or maintaining a fire or campfire unless it is in an approved fire ring.

People wishing to have campfires outside of the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District should contact local County Officials to see if burn bans are in place.
