Sprinting toward a new season of auto racing

Spring is here and summer is fast approaching, and with them, a new season of sprint car races is upon us. With drivers expected from South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado and even as far as Missouri, local racers will be competing for another few months of fast fun, dust, speed and glory.
The races begin on May 29, with five other races throughout the summer. The biggest of these will be on Aug. 6-7 for the Sagebrush Shoot Out. Also scheduled this year is a race on July 23 during the Weston County Fair.
Ron Fulk said they are working on also getting cart races included in the schedule. Along with the sprint cars will be motocross races. Plenty of these events will feature kids from all over. Of course, there will be food concessions and even shaved ice.
The events will be held at the race track at the Weston County Fairgrounds. See the sidebar for the actual dates and times of the races.
The Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department and the ambulance service will be at each event on standby should emergency services be needed. Fulk said that volunteers are also required; no experience is necessary. The events need people to help at the gate, to put cars on and off the track and with other projects. “We do this to get kids and adults together to do things with each other,” Fulk said, “There’s not a lot of outdoor activities in Newcastle all the time. This promotes a family atmosphere where the adults and kids can have fun together.”
