Spread Creek Fire 87% contained
JACKSON (WNE) β A 250-acre fire near Sagebrush Flat on the top of Spread Creek was 87% contained by press time on Monday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
The Bridger-Teton National Forest, where the Spread Creek Fire broke out, announced Sunday that it would no longer issue daily updates on the fire. Fire managers in charge of the fire were ramping down resources, according to an update from the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The fire will transition back to local control today, said CJ Adams, a spokesperson for the forest.
At its peak, 167 people were working on the fire. Resources included a helicopter, drones, four hotshot crews, two suppression crews, an initial attack crew and four fire engines.
The lightning-caused fire started last Wednesday near Sagebrush Flat on the top of Spread Creek, a few miles south of the Hatchet Resort near the base of Togwotee Pass.
Though there was a quick initial response, thunderstorms, strong winds and dry conditions contributed to the growth of the fire, which was 257 acres by Thursday morning.
On Thursday afternoon there were high winds and dry conditions, which led trees to burn from the bottom up and embers to travel outside of the fireβs perimeter. Firefighters responded quickly and were able to prevent the fire from growing.
Firefighters had contained 5% of the fire by Friday morning. They made progress on Friday, which was not a day of active fire behavior, and contained 53% of the fire by Saturday morning.
Saturday was not an active day for the fire either, due to overcast skies and cooler temperatures. By Sunday morning, firefighters had the fire 78% contained. That day, they worked to secure the fire area, extinguish remaining hotspots and improve fire lines.
Firefighters were mopping up the fire on Monday, Adams said.
